Frequently Asked Questions

Why do I sometimes get the message "Page not Found" when I click a link? Since the website is under development, there are frequent changes: try going back and clicking on "Refresh" on the top menu bar for each page (it may have changed since the last time your browser memorized it). If that doesn't solve the problem, report the error to:  peter (at) FCC-STW (dot) org

Why is the homepage so plain? Because some of our members have older computers and slow telephone modems, Peter wrote most pages in simple and compact HTML code, so that any browser can bring up these pages quickly. (You can test the speed of your connection by seeing how long pages on complex websites take to "Refresh".) As we add multi-photo and video pages, you may want to update your browser to view them. (Check out the original proposal for the website.)

I have bad eyesight: Can I make the letters bigger? One advantage of simple HTML is that your browser formats the output. If you are vision-impaired, your can increase the font sizes, for example in "Internet Explorer" by pulling down the "Tools" menu, and under "Internet Options" - "General" - "Accessibility" putting in your own MS-Word-like style-sheet.

Why won't my computer open the print-optimized form of the Newsletter? The Portable Document Format requires Adobe Acrobat Reader which is already installed on most computers. If you have problems, you may download the latest version for free at the Adobe Reader website, or you can simply print the viewing-optimized HTML file, which comes out pretty good-looking!

Why are the e-mail addresses written out phonetically? Peter avoids putting "mail to" information on websites, because spammers utilize automated web-crawlers that look for the @-symbol. When we web-publish e-mail addresses without the "@", it is less convenient for you, but reduces our spam overload. For additional privacy protection, we would prefer if you didn't store our e-mail addresses in MS-Outlook, since hackers often take over those Address Books. And when our staff or volunteers do get spam, we discourage ever opening it, since that action triggers further spam or even identity theft.

How do I learn to write HTML? Peter has written a simple introductory Tutorial.
